14 November 2011, 9.00 – 18.00 hrs
University of Porto, Porto, Portugal
This workshop discussed challenges of knowledge transfer, good practices, and ways towards more systematic approaches. The contribution of universities and public research institutes in Portugal and Spain to economic development is increasingly recognised. However, there are severe challenges for all stakeholders involved: Universities need to manage their expectations regarding income generation through knowledge transfer, while maximising its impact. Companies need to become more involved in collaborative research. Agencies funding research and innovation need to adopt a more coherent approach. There needs to be a longer term commitment to funding knowledge transfer offices and to increasing the status of the knowledge transfer profession.
This workshop supported the implementation of the European Commission's 2008 Recommendation on the management of intellectual property in knowledge transfer activities and Code of Practice for universities and public research organisations (http://ec.europa.eu/invest-in-research/pdf/ip_recommendation_en.pdf) and was part of a workshop series covering 39 European countries in 2011 and 2012.
The event took place in co-location with the University Technology Enterprise Network (UTEN) Annual Conference 2011 (http://utenportugal.org/events/). It offered a unique opportunity for national and international knowledge transfer stakeholders to discuss related activities, results and challenges in Portugal and abroad. The morning session of the workshop and the UTEN Conference took place jointly; in the afternoon, both events proceeded in separate and parallel sessions.
The workshop convened stakeholders in knowledge transfer, in particular from universities, public research organisations, governmental organisations and business. Attendance was free of charge and by personal invitation.
