European Knowledge and Technology Transfer Practice Survey

This survey is administered by the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz FHNW) on behalf of the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation. It aims to obtain primary internationally comparable data on principles and practices of intellectual property (IP) management and transfer to the private sector for universities and public research institutes in Europe. It assesses these principles and practices along the lines of the European Commission's Recommendation on Knowledge Transfer (see http://ec.europa.eu/invest-in-research/pdf/download_en/ip_recommendation.pdf) and the Code of Practice for universities and other public research organisations in annex I. It serves to increase knowledge of IP management and knowledge transfer and provides input for improved policy-making and funding in Europe.

The online questionnaire for the survey consists of 43 questions addressing principles and practices in the modules IP policy, services and incentives in IP and knowledge transfer, exploitation and commercialisation practice, collaborative and contract research, monitoring and communication of research, IP and knowledge transfer, and staff of the transfer offices.

The survey covers the 27 EU member states and the 12 countries associated to the 7th European Framework Programme. It is sent to 100 selected leading universities and public research institutions in either their country or in Europe in 2011. Respondents are the responsible offices for knowledge and technology transfer and/or research.

The survey is piloted in 2011. It will be followed by a full survey to a larger sample in 2012.
